About Our SEND Gymnastics Classes

This class is suitable for:

​

1- Children who have been diagnosed with an impairment, disability or special educational need, and have a degree of body control that allows them to achieve some basic gymnastics skills.

2- Children with mental challenges which are triggered by being in a too fast-paced, too busy, and noisy environments.

3- Children with no diagnoses, who do not feel confident to take part in a larger group setting.

Gymnastics is the topic of this class.

Instructors will maintain an individual approach tailored to each child. We will start from basic gymnastics moves to build up into more or less complex skills, following the children's natural interests and incline, and taking into consideration individual challenges.

 

Children need a class that is less structured, with little pressure.

They will progress at their own pace and will receive plenty of encouragement.

  • What happens in a Sensory Integration session?
    In the SI sessions your child will benefit from movement-based play. Instructions are kept to a minimum, mainly to ensure safety in the gym at all times, and to give a sense of direction. Our gym is a small ex-Scout’s hut, clean, safe and well-equipped with gymnastics and sensory equipment and props. A fun environment filled with lots of sensory tools such as coloured equipment, lights, mats, various slings, bars, rings, inflatable equipment, bouncy equipment, props of various kind, music and a lot more. Children will have the opportunity to climb, spin, twist, roll, lay down on various equipment, hang onto bars or rings, hop, play with our sensory props, relax in our silk slings etc. We provide 3/4 SEN instructors for 6/8 children per group. Our lovely SEN instructors are very much hands on and interact fully with our children to give each the attention needed. Families have given excellent feedback on these sessions and said that their children go home more regulated and sleep well at night.
  • Can I sit in during the class?
    We always encourage parents to sit and watch from our designated area, however if your presence is needed, we will be happy to accommodate that. Over time, we aim to reduce parents' presence in the gym so that children can become more independent, and parents can take a break. Sensory sessions: If your child is PICA, we may need to ask you to sit in the gym hall and watch your child to prevent them from eating non-food items, while our SEN instructors will guide them to play-activities. Whenever possible, we will try to remove from the gym objects that may pose a risk to PICA children prior to the class begin. We follow a live risk assessment which we continuously update.
  • Who are the SEND classes aimed at?
    These classes are designed for children between the age of 3-16 for sensory integration classes, and 5-10yrs for SEND Gymnastics. Our Sensory Integration sessions are designed for young people with movement & coordination challenges and learning disabilities who wouldn’t be able to participate in a regular gymnastics class. Held on Friday. 2.30pm is for children aged 3-10yrs (preschool and home school) 4pm is for children aged 4-6yrs 5pm for children 7-10yrs 6pm for children 11-16pm SEND Gymnastics is for children with impairments or disabilities who have a degree of physical coordination to achieve in time basic gymnastics moves. Held on Thursday: 6.10pm for children aged 5-10yrs Trials are for you to understand if our service is for you, but also for us to assess if your child is enrolled in the correct class. If we believe your child would better benefit another class, we will discuss this with you. The monthly fees will line up to the correct class, so these may increase or decrease accordingly.
  • What types of exercises are included in the classes?
    Our classes feature a range of activities tailored to each child's abilities, including floor skills, balance beam techniques, bars, vaulting and various climbing activities. SEND Gymnastics classes hold a gymnastics approach. Sensory Integration classes hold a sensory integration approach to improve children's sensory and vestibular system.
  • Why do I pay for months like August when the gym is closed?
    Our fees are calculated on 39 weeks/year split equally among 12 months. This means that there will be months when your child trains 5 times, and months like December and April when the training days are reduced due to school holidays, and months like August when the gym is closed. Usually in August we spend the extra profits on new equipment. We took this decision after regular surveys with our families where 95% voted for this option, to allow families to budget gymnastics within their monthly expenses. Our new SEND classes are instead split between 11 months (excluding August).
  • Are your coaches security checked?
    All our coaches are enhanced DBS checked prior to starting working with us. Security checks are kept up-to-date and renewed every 3 years.
  • Do I have to pay annual insurance?
    Insurance is now included pro-rata in your monthly fees.
  • When do your classes run?
    We run normal training during school term time, which usually is 39 weeks/year.
  • Where are you located?

  • Do you run holiday sessions?
    Yes during half-term and school holidays we run 5 hours holiday camps 10am to 3pm with the option of early drop off at 9am. Occasionally, we also run 1 hour open sessions or workshops. Both are offered at a discounted rate for our members. To know more, click on 'holiday camps'.
  • What should my child wear to gymnastics classes?
    Comfortable, fitted clothing that allows for movement is best. Leotards or fitted t-shirts and shorts or leggings are recommended. Bare feet. No jewellery. No earrings. Hair tied up. No skirts or dresses. No baggy crop tops (only sportswear crop tops).
  • Do you offer trial classes for new students?
    Yes, we offer trial classes so your child can experience our program before committing. Beginners are very welcome. On our website click on 'book a trial' and choose your class.
  • What skills will my child learn in gymnastics classes?
    Children will learn gymnastics skills such as rolls, handstands, cartwheels, balance beam techniques, bars, and basic vaulting. Skills are taught progressively to ensure safe and steady development. Children will also learn to put together skills into routines. Twice/year we run Performance Awards levels which is a level that children have to pass to obtain a certificate and medal for that level. At the end of the school year we also run an in-house gymnastics competition in Tiptree.
  • What age should my child start gymnastics?
    Gym Tots is an independent and structured class from the age of 3. All our afternoon classes are reserved for children of school age. The recommended starting age is 4-5, however pre-school gymnastics sets a good basis for general gymnastics.
  • Are parents allowed to watch the classes?
    We encourage parents to watch and support their children from designated viewing areas. This helps maintain focus and concentration among the students during classes.
  • How long are the gymnastics classes?
    All our classes are 1 hour long with the exception of Gym Tots which is 45min long as per British Gymnastics guidance. Our classes are structured: 5 min warm up with the music 15 min on each piece for 3 stations 5-10min stickers and dismissal
  • What should children wear to tumbling classes?
    Children should wear comfortable, form-fitting athletic attire that allows for ease of movement. Leotard are preferred especially for older children.
  • Do children need prior gymnastics experience to join tumbling classes?
    Children must have previous gymnastics experience and show a certain level of coordination and competence before taking part.
  • Is tumbling safe for children?
    Safety is our top priority. Our instructors are trained in progressive learning, spotting techniques and use of appropriate mats and equipment to ensure a safe learning environment.
  • What skills will children learn in tumbling classes?
    We run our tumbling classes on a 9x2x0.2 metre air track plus side stations to perfect the technique. Children will learn roundoff, flicks, somersaults, aerials, handsprings, and a combination of all of them together.
  • What age range is suitable for tumbling?
    Tumbling classes are typically suitable for children aged 7 and older, however children must show a certain level of coordination and competence before taking part. Our tumbling class is considered to be an intermediate level.
  • What safety measures are in place during the Home Education classes?
    Safety is paramount. Our instructors are trained in handling diverse needs, teach in a progressive manner, and in respecting children's mental and physical readiness. Our facility is equipped with safety mats and appropriate equipment to ensure a safe learning environment. The ratio instructor:children is greatly reduced to give a better individualistic approach and to target specific areas of improvement for each child.
  • Who can participate in the Home Education classes?
    These classes are open to children who are able to attend during school time. We welcome children of various ages and abilities. Children taking part to this class must be able to follow instructions. Children have a regular degree of coordination and control and are able to learn gymnastics skills. Most of our home education gymnasts have a degree of special educational needs.
  • Can I sit in during the class?
    We always encourage parents to sit and watch from our designated area, however if your presence is needed, we may consider accommodating that. Over time, we aim to reduce parents' presence in the gym so that children can become more independent, and parents can take a break, go for a walk, do some exercise, do some work, or just relax.
  • How can I enrol my child?
    To enrol please sign up for a trial in our home education classes. Please be as open as you can and specify the special needs so that the coaches can take them into consideration during the sessions.
  • Is there a specific curriculum for the Home Education classes?
    Yes, we have a specialised curriculum that focuses on developing fundamental gymnastics skills while fostering confidence, coordination, and social interaction. Our home education follow the same curriculum as conventional classes, in a more relaxed environment and with better understanding of individual needs.
  • How are the classes structured to accommodate children with special needs?
    Our instructors have experience working with diverse needs and adapt the class structure and exercises accordingly. Children must be able to follow instructions and have a regular degree of coordination and control. We offer a variety of options in addition to the Monday 12.30 Home Ed class. Check out Timetable.
  • Do children need prior gymnastics or dance experience to join aerial classes?
    No prior experience is required. Our aerial hoop classes are designed for beginners and accommodate various skill levels.
  • What age range is suitable for aerial hoop/silk sling classes?
    Typically, children ages 6 and older can participate in aerial hoop classes. Younger children may be considered based on their maturity and physical readiness.
  • What should children wear to aerial activities?
    Children should wear form-fitting athletic attire that covers the back of the knees and torso. No loose clothing. No jewellery.
  • Is aerial hoop/silk sling safe for children?
    Safety is our top priority. Our instructors are trained in aerial arts safety techniques and use crash mats and spotting techniques to ensure a safe learning environment.
  • Do you offer afternoon aerial hoop/silk sling classes?
    We used to, but our instructor is no longer available in the afternoon, hence why we only run Tuesday morning sessions.
  • What skills will children learn in aerial classes?
    Children will learn how to mount, dismount, and perform various poses and transitions on the aerial hoop. Classes focus on building strength, flexibility, and coordination.
  • What should I wear to a pole fitness class?
    Wear fitted workout attire that allows for freedom of movement, such as shorts and a tank top. Avoid slippery fabrics and jewellery that could interfere with pole grip.
  • Will pole fitness help me build strength and flexibility?
    Yes, pole fitness is a great full-body workout that targets core strength, upper body conditioning, and flexibility. Regular practice can lead to noticeable improvements in strength and flexibility over time.
  • Is there a specific age range for adult pole fitness classes?
    Our classes are typically geared towards adults, but age requirements may vary. Contact us directly for more information on age eligibility and class suitability.
  • Do I need any prior experience to join adult pole fitness classes?
    No prior experience is required. Our classes cater to beginners and experienced participants alike, with instructors providing guidance and modifications based on individual skill levels.
  • Are pole fitness classes suitable for men and women?
    Absolutely! Pole fitness is inclusive and beneficial for individuals of all genders interested in building strength, coordination, and confidence.
  • Do you run holiday activities?
    Yes, during half-term or school holidays, we run 5 hour camps 10am-3pm, with the option of early drop off at 9am. In our camps we run gymnastics plus other activities on our timetable, depending on availability of the coaches. To know more, go to the 'holiday camps' section.
  • What types of skills and exercises will I learn in an adult gymnastics class?
    You will learn a variety of skills and exercises, including basic floor (like forward rolls, handstands and cartwheels), strength and conditioning exercises, flexibility training, and apparatus work such as on the bars, beam and vault. We work in a relaxed atmosphere so you will do what you want and can.
  • Is it too late to start gymnastics as an adult?
    No, it's never too late to start gymnastics! Many adults begin gymnastics to improve fitness, flexibility, and coordination, regardless of their previous experience or skill level.
  • How can gymnastics benefit my overall fitness?
    Gymnastics provides a full-body workout that enhances strength, flexibility, balance, coordination, and cardiovascular health. It also improves mental focus and discipline.
  • Do I need any prior experience to join an adult gymnastics class?
    No prior experience is necessary. Adult gymnastics classes cater to all skill levels, from complete beginners to those with previous gymnastics experience. Instructors will tailor exercises to match individual capabilities.
  • What should I wear to adult gymnastics classes?
    Comfortable, form-fitting athletic wear such as leggings, shorts, and a fitted top is ideal. Avoid clothing that is too loose, as it can get caught on equipment. Bare feet or gymnastics shoes are usually preferred for better grip.
  • How often should I attend classes to see improvement?
    Consistency is key. Attending classes 2-3 times per week is generally recommended for noticeable progress, but even once a week can yield benefits over time. Supplementing with at-home exercises can also accelerate improvement.
